My favorite part of reading is the two way communication between the writer and reader. No one else is privy to our thoughts, there is no filter between us. There is no director or actor giving us their interpretation, there is no lawyer arguing and manipulating the facts. It is a conversation between to old friends, albeit the output is mostly one sided and the input is purely in the readers mind. The result is left to the involved parties to interpret. That is the magic of literacy, it opens the mind to exploration of new worlds and new ideas. Maguel does an incredible job of relating how the history of literacy has not only changed the world but how it his changed his life.
He connects the history of the world to the history of his life. I feel the same. It is as though the history of my life is recorded in the pages of the books I have read. I can go back to any time period and connect it to some novel or writing that had a large impact on my life at that time. When I was a teenager struggling with my own identity, S.E. Hinton spoke to me with, " The Outsiders." As I grew into adulthood and struggled with trying to build a family and career Mario Puzzo guided me with, " The Godfather". As I saw myself change over time and relationships came and went, I clung to Roland Deschain in Stephen King's " The Dark Tower" series.
I also connected with Maguel in this book because of his attachments to the reading. I too refuse to let go of the books I have read. I keep them close like Dahmer kept his victims, they are now apart of me. Reading has indeed changed the word but more importantly it has changed my world. My life is richer and far grander for having seen the world through the lives of some writer I will never meet in some place I will never see.
The ramblings of a wannabe rock star stuck in the past who refuses to let go of things long gone.

Me
Let me introduce myself. My name is Stephen Huff, I go by Brent. I am 39 years old and am married with two sons. My oldest, Ryan, is a Freshman here at KSU. My youngest, Aaron, is a Senior at Paulding County High School. I have been married to my best friend, Barbara, for 19 years. You can see my facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1471786750.
I am three major things, a Star Wars geek, a football fanatic, and a huge fan of The Beatles. I am currently the coach of the Paulding County High School 8th grade middle school football team. I am also President of the High School Touchdown Club. You can visit the middle school teams website at jrpatriotsfootball.com or the varsity website at pchsfootball.com.
I read everything I can get my hands on and watch every documentary I can find when it comes to Beatles history. My personal favorite Beatle is George Harrison but I love them all. I wish I could have lived during their heyday and seen them perform live.
My only regret in life is that I have been unable to journey to Tatooine to visit the homestead of my idol Luke Skywalker. I am not a big fan of the expanded universe and I have no Jedi robes but I love the films and everything about them.
I can be very quiet when I first meet someone but as I gain a level of comfort I will open up. I try my best to be a better person today than I was yesterday and while I often fail, I try again tomorrow.
I am going to school in hopes of earning a degree in English education and plan to be finished within the next two and a half years.
